The prevalence of mental disorders in Pakistan is rapidly increasing amidst growing insecurity, poverty, violence, terrorism, economical problems, political uncertainty, unemployment, stressful working conditions, gender discrimination, unhealthy lifestyle, physical ill health, genetic factors, unrestricted urbanization, and disruption of the social fabric and loss of protective family networks.
In light of dire need for Psychiatric and mental health facilities in Pakistan, we envisage a multi–tiered facility that includes inpatient as well as outpatient services.
The Center will cater to:
- Bipolar Disorder
- Autistic disorders/MR/Pervasive development disorders
- Schizophrenic disorders
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Electro Convulsive Therapy
- Rehabilitation services
The Neuro Psychiatric Hospital will have inpatient, outpatient, an intake department with an emergency room, an outpatient center, an ECT suite and also a center of learning where we will train mental health professionals.
We expect the hospital to have 125 beds to 150 beds providing services as follows:
Block 1 – inpatient child and adolescent block where we will be treating children and adolescents for all psychiatric disorders. Within this unit we will provide schooling in addition to the inpatient acute treatment administered as well as rehabilitation services for children and young people.
Block 2 – inpatient unit specifically to treat developmental disabilities and disorders on the spectrum such as autism. Within this unit we will provide specialist and specialized treatment for these disorders including behavioral modification.
Block 3 – inpatient adult psychiatric unit where we will be treating adults suffering from psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar and anxiety.
Block 4 – inpatient adult substance abuse, chemical dependency, detox, and addiction treatment unit where we will provide specialized treatment for drug use and abuse, detox and rehabilitation services.
Block 5 – inpatient geriatric unit where we will treat older adults who are experiencing psychiatric issues along with behavioral issues related to dementia and Alzheimer.
Block 6 -The intake unit will be part of the emergency services where patients will be evaluated both medically and psychiatrically. We will do medical screening such as medical examinations, laboratory along with psychiatric evaluations. The intake and emergency department will provide crisis intervention services, assessments and referrals and will operate 24.7.
Block 7 - An Outpatient Center where we will provide outpatient treatment for both children and adults. The Outpatient Center will include an ECT Suite, Ketamine Clinic and TMS treatment. During outpatient treatment patients will receive medication management, and different therapies based on their clinical presentations and diagnosis.
Block 8 - ECT involves a brief electrical stimulation of the brain while the patient is under anesthesia. ECT will be offered to both inpatients and outpatients.TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-invasive treatment that is used for the treatment of major depression, OCD, PTSD, and many other psychiatric conditions. In addition, ketamine infusions and Spravato will be administered in the outpatient center to those patients who are treatment resistant to other forms of treatment.Our facility will include a cafeteria and dinning rooms where patients will be served daily meals and snacks. Each of the Blocks will have designated group treatment rooms and activities rooms where patients will be engaged in treatment management and treated with different modalities such as group and individual therapies as well as occupational and vocational training. The patients will have access to outdoor spaces that will be designed to provide fresh air, exercise and other opportunities for outdoor treatment and activities while maintaining safety.
Block 9 – Educational, and Research Center -where we will teach, research and train mental health professionals.We believe that the Neuropsychiatric Center in Karachi will be a state-of-the-art psychiatric facility that will deliver quality care to patients and a place where medical professionals can develop new skills and best practices.
